Flu Shots & Drink Shots -- Immunology @ a Bar!

We propose to hold an event in Chicago called “Shots with Shots” to teach people about vaccines and provide flu shots. A panel of experts will discuss flu, viruses in general, and flu and other vaccines. The atmosphere will be casual and fun to lower the barriers to learning. Each attendee will receive a ticket for an alcohol shot (or non-alcoholic drink) -- hence the attention-getting name “Shots & Shots”!

Vaccines are an extraordinary advancement for human health, and yet a troubling movement has developed that claims vaccines are harmful and should be avoided. These claims are based on fabricated evidence, but it remains difficult to change public opinion. Even those who understand that vaccines are safe and effective have questions or concerns about flu vaccines specifically. This event will provide an opportunity for people to ask questions, learn about immunology and vaccinations, and get their annual flu shot.

The event will be held at Haymarket Pub & Brewery in Chicago’s West Loop on, September 25, 2019 in a private room (capacity 70+), that includes a separate area where flu shots can be administered. We have confirmed two subject matter experts: Susan Ross, PhD, Head of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Illinois at Chicago and Steve Piecyk, PharmD, an Osco pharmacist.

We recognize that many people access flu shots through their work or doctor. However, many employers offer the shot only once; our event will provide an extra, easy opportunity to get a shot and insurance will be accepted. Those who don’t have coverage for flu vaccines might normally skip it; this event will give them an opportunity to get a shot free of charge.

We seek Awesome Foundation support to pay for flu shots for individuals who don’t have insurance and to cover event costs. We will charge a low event fee $10-$15 to cover drink tickets and, importantly, to reduce attrition in attendance. No Awesome Foundation funds will be used for alcohol.
