The Last Zellers In Ottawa Is Finally Closing Its Doors Forever

It's the final days of a Canadian institution.
Ottawa Zellers Location Is One Of The Last Ones & Its Closing This Month
Contributor

Any Canadian who grew up in the 90s and early 2000s probably has fond memories of going to Zellers and finding some great bargains. Of course, nothing lasts forever, and the department store was no exception. While you might think all of the stores were permanently closed, one of Ottawa's Zellers locations is still open. However, by the end of the month, it will be gone for good.

The Zellers at Bells Corner in Ottawa is still standing, and believe it or not, there is still merchandise inside the store. However, this isn't the classic department store most Canadians grew up going to.

This location is actually just a clearance centre for merchandise from The Bay. This means that prices are starting higher and discounts may not actually be as low as you'd like them to be, especially with so many designer labels.

What's also missing are some of the more iconic touches of Zellers, including the store restaurant. We guess you can forget about grabbing a bite while bargain hunting.

Still, with the store set to close permanently by the end of January, there are still deals to be found. Prices are currently as low as 90% off.

With time running out, customers are still crowding the store looking for great deals.

One employee told CBC News that the store actually has to turn customers away once it reaches capacity.

Zellers was first opened all the way back in 1931, and at its peak, there were 350 stores across Canada. In 2011, HBC, which owned Zellers, sold most of the store spaces to Target for their expansion into Canada. We all remember how that went.

After that, there were 64 locations left in Canada, and the majority of them closed in 2013.

Aside from the store in Ottawa, there is one other Zellers location in Etobicoke that is still holding on as well, although it will also be closed by the end of the month.

If you're in the Ottawa area, and you want to relive your Zellers memories in some small way, you might want to head out to 2065 Robertson Rd. and take a look around before it's gone forever.
