RIO RANCHO, N.M. (KRQE) – Local students are dipping their hands into a new lesson, the importance of water.

Fourth-grade students from Rio Rancho and Placitas are experiencing everything water at the 13th Annual Children’s Water Festival. Students get to participate in hands-on activities that focus on everything kids need to know to help keep their water safe and clean.

Rio Rancho officials say these activities are important because there is only one water source for the city.

“Keeping the water clean is very important, so having the children learn about how trash can contaminate the water, how oil or even dog poop, which is the worst one…just pick up after your pets…that really contaminates the surface water,” environmental programs manager Marian Wrage said.

Among the activities, showing kids how to clean dirty water, becoming familiar with resource management, and understanding the common measurements of water.
