ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Two Albuquerque police officers were honored Friday for helping an expecting couple.

The parents-to-be were forced out of their apartment by a fire in June.

Then while staying at a hotel someone broke in and took off with about $900 worth of baby items.

That is when officers Ryan Holets and Joseph Gumble decided to help, buying baby clothes, other baby items and a $200 gift card.

“And stealing baby clothes, I think at that point it was that straw and they don’t have money to save it. They’re going to have this baby soon and so there’s a little more urgency too, so we need to do something,” said Officer Ryan Holet.

Today, the officers were recognized for their good deed when the mayor named them Friday’s heroes.

The mayor also recognized lifeguards Elise Drummond, Jarod Nunex and Laurynn Aragon as Employees of the Week.

The trio saved the life of a girl who almost drowned in a city pool.
